Changes to Section 34-8-7 of the Code of Alabama will take effect October 1, 2026, and include updates to exemptions from general contractor licensing requirements.  Act 2026-396

The changes include an exemption for the construction and repair of residential swimming pools, along with new exemptions for certain routine or regular maintenance, repair, cleaning, and facility support services.
Contractors and industry stakeholders are encouraged to review the changes and consider how they may apply to their work. Because the law does not define every situation that may qualify as routine or regular maintenance, questions regarding specific projects should be addressed with the Board before bidding on or beginning work.
